Did you know that today is the International Archives Day? Since 2008 it has always taken place on June 9th.
The International Archives Day goes back to a 2007 initiative of the ICA (International Council on Archives).
The ICA is an international non-governmental organization dedicated to the effective management of archival material and the preservation of the world's archives. The organization represents the interests of around 1400 members from 199 countries and regions and works closely with the Council of Europe, UNESCO and many other influential NGOs. As early as 2004, at the international ICA congress in Vienna, a resolution was signed by 2,000 participants calling on the United Nations to create an International Archives Day. Some countries had already introduced national variants of an archive day in order to draw attention to the importance of the archives or the activities of archivists. In Germany the Day of the Archives takes place in March and the German Archive Day in October.
In November 2007, the ICA decided at its annual general meeting to start the International Day of Archives on June 9th. Why June 9th of all places? On June 9, 1948, the International Council of Archives was established under the auspices of UNESCO.
The International Day of Archives serves to raise awareness of the importance of archives, their protection and their free access.
In addition, the contribution of the archivists and their professional solidarity should be recognized.
